We are introduced to the obese Edwin Black, living out his grand dreams in the seclusion of his mother’s house, but brought low by banal reality Black is both literally and metaphorically constipated. Yet many of the other strands are lighter and more optimistic, encapsulating the breadth of human experience. The book steers clear of the antique romance of the open plains for that, as Orange wryly notes: “we have… Kevin Costner saving us, John Wayne slaying us an Italian guy named Iron Eyes Cody playing our parts in movies”. Orange, himself a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma, deals not just with several centuries of oppression of the Native American community (which a brief, dryly witty prologue deals with in a devastatingly matter-of-fact way), but how rites and tradition can seem comically anachronistic in a world of “glass, metal, rubber, and wires, the speed, the hurtling masses” in which “the city took us in”. The novel centres on the interconnected lives of a group of Native Americans – or Indians, as they call themselves, determined to reclaim a term more often used disparagingly. Oakland happens also to be Orange’s home town and provides the setting for the book, which has attracted many admiring reviews in the US. T he title of Tommy Orange’s bold debut novel is a reference to Gertrude Stein’s line about the city of her childhood, Oakland, California: “there is no there there”, she wrote. In other words, the Protestant work ethic was an important force behind the unplanned and uncoordinated emergence of modern capitalism. In the book, Weber wrote that capitalism in Northern Europe evolved when the Protestant (particularly Calvinist) ethic influenced large numbers of people to engage in work in the secular world, developing their own enterprises and engaging in trade and the accumulation of wealth for investment. It is considered a founding text in economic sociology and a milestone contribution to sociological thought in general. Begun as a series of essays, the original German text was composed in 19, and was translated into English for the first time by American sociologist Talcott Parsons in 1930. The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism ( German: Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus) is a book written by Max Weber, a German sociologist, economist, and politician. For millennia, its carriers have been hunted by those who would steal it. Worse, news of the healing miracle spreads. It happened to her when Nazis butchered her family.īut it all goes to hell when Miles heals a terminally ill man on a New Orleans cancer ward and wakes locked in the psych unit. Miles, like his grandmother, Anna, possesses the healing gift, an ability she’s made him swear never to use or divulge, lest horrible things befall those he loves. Though he harbors a crush on his straight best friend, Luke. Handsome, brilliant, and surrounded by good friends, twenty-three-year-old medical student Miles Fox has a secret-and it’s not that he’s gay. As inventive and dexterously constructed as anything Paul Auster has ever written, 4 3 2 1 is an unforgettable tour de force, the crowning work of this masterful writer's extraordinary career. A boy grows up - again and again and again. Chapter by chapter, the rotating narratives evolve into an elaborate dance of inner worlds enfolded within the outer forces of history as, one by one, the intimate plot of each Ferguson's story rushes on across the tumultuous and fractured terrain of mid-20th-century America. Loves and friendships and intellectual passions contrast. Four Fergusons made of the same genetic material, four boys who are the same boy, will go on to lead four parallel and entirely different lives. From that single beginning, Ferguson's life will take four simultaneous and independent fictional paths. On March 3, 1947, in the maternity ward of Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, Archibald Isaac Ferguson, the one and only child of Rose and Stanley Ferguson, is born. One of my favorites for bringing these two elements together is Stephen King's, Bag of Bones. When love stories are combined with ghost stories, I find them so haunting. It sneaks up behind you, soft and gentle and quiet, just before it slits your throat." "Love is an enchantress - devious and wild. It gave such depth to the story and the characters. The modern and historical were seamlessly brought together. That was a neat little twist I wasn't expecting, to have that historical perspective. I loved how she gave us insights into the times of the Swan sisters as well. It checked all of my boxes for an enjoyable and whimsical narrative. The Wicked Deep reads like a modern-day fairy tale, full of witches, magic, curses, revenge, mystery and love. I could feel the wind, the mist, the fog, the influx of outsiders, the weight of it was palatable and I thought Ernshaw brought that feeling to life.Įrnshaw's writing is enchanting, using breathtaking descriptions to weave together her tale. One that is a tourist destination and at times, in a way that can feel exploitative. Ernshaw's descriptions of the small seaside town of Sparrow, Oregon of the island, the weather and the tourists, was 100% relatable to me. The main thing I was looking for with this story was, ATMOSPHERE. The Wicked Deep received a lot of hype and in this case, I feel it's warranted. I can see myself revisiting it for years to come. The Wicked Deep is an eerily beautiful book hella atmospheric and immersive.
